Federation and Californian bungalow homes from the 1910s and 1930s dominate the local conservation area, most of them double-brick under red or brown tile roofs.

That heritage status cuts both ways electrically. Conservation controls limit what can change on the street-facing side of a house, which pushes cable runs and new switchgear toward the rear or into the roof space instead.

Buyers there skew toward young professionals, which shapes what actually gets requested: data points for a home office, EV charging, and lighting upgrades rather than heritage-specific work.

None of that means the work is simpler, just different. A unit's switchboard is smaller and more accessible, but strata approval and shared risers add their own steps a standalone house never has to deal with.

Professional households buying into the suburb are also driving demand for EV chargers, which usually means checking whether the existing supply can take the extra load before a charger goes in.

Muttama Road and Artarmon Road are two of the streets where this comes up most, older double-brick homes with driveways added well after the original build and a switchboard that predates any of it. Retrofitting a charger there usually means a supply upgrade first, not simply a plug bolted to the wall.

Three issues account for most of what we actually see beyond safety switches.
